Hi Rudolph, the usual base I use for painting enamels is:  one layer flux then 2 (or 3) layers of Schauer opal white.  There is something about the opalescents that makes them very receptive to painting enamels.  I've never had cracking, though, just the usual fight with firescale.  Just be sure you have a double layer of counter enamel.
