I'm plating a nickel layer under the 24K gold plate to keep the silver from migrating through the gold. It looks so nice that I'm wondering if I can gold plate over silver then enamel over the plate. Would be nice if I can then use reds and other colors that don't work well over silver. Has anyone tried enameling over gold plate? Thanks.

No you cannot enamel on gold plating because it is too thin and will dissolve into the glass. Thompsons offers a heavy silver plated steel that is good for only 1 firing.
Jim Jordan → Kim: Hi Kim, while you're home for Christmas, set aside some time and we'll do some enameling. Dad

I've been doing chasing and repousse for quite a while, but I've had three workshops over the last year and now I'm hooked. Still haven't figured out the best way to enamel it, but I have quite a few copper practice pieces to work on. I'd love to see some of your work, maybe you could post some. Jim

I asked Trish to invite him to Grains, so maybe we will get to meet him. I'm sure you are on a learning curve with your repousse. I get so mono-maniacal when I'm on to a new process that I often wake up in the morning with a new thought about some little thing to try. I wonder how my husband lives with me! And thanks for your comment about my style. The interesting thing is that before Grains I felt my work was kind of plain and average, but now with all the pix here I see that it really isn't like anybody else's work. I was in something of a vacuum, working alone. Now I don't feel that way! less
Vera Meyer: Jim, I found this wonderful video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ch86PihGjoE&NR=1 It looks like the guy is airbrushing on liquid enamels directly (industrial enamels), not Klyr-fire then sifting. But what a cool video. v

Vera Meyer: Please let me know how it works. And do write up a description for the notebook. These side conversations on Grains get lost and others having the same problems would like to know the solutions. Good luck!

After use run distilled water through to clean out the pen...dried Klyrfire is about impossible to get out of the pen. Also, pre-sifting to 200 mesh helps because the finer grains will adhere better on sloping surfaces and in detailed crevices. When she had completed airbrushing a piece it had a perfect thin crust of enamel grains...it was beautiful before firing. Sarah is a member...you could ask her if she has any other tips.

Usually, Linda answers right back on her blackberry - I wish I was a fly on the wall right now! they must be having a ball. Still, i would check back with her in a few weeks, just to get some feedback - She is heading to Thompsons for a workshop in June, I think, thats the date, then Haystack in August. She keeps an enormous schedule. Love the photos of your work Jim, they are going right up.

If I were you, and I am not, but I will suggest emailing Linda Darty and asking her tips on the Repousse enamelling - I was in the class when she
fluxed the entire 6x6 copper tile that Fabrizzio had repoussed and I have it
and it came out fab - she didn't have enough time to cover it with other colors as it was last minute for the auction - but she is great about responding to questions. The member that is doing traditional Mexican repousse on this site is Sharon Siqueiros - she is now just learning enamelling in case you want to make contact. if you have any announcements, or exhibitions , workshops, or whatever that might be great for the site let me know. pwhite1125@yahoo.com

I'm surprised that he air brushes and blows enamel around without a mask. Doesn't seem safe even with a paint booth. So far I've done two attempts chasing copper from the back and repousse from the front. I think the chasing work hardens the lines that then tear out from the front. Next I'm going to try just repousse, no chasing. At least copper is cheap. Thanks for all your help. By the way, I really like your pieces, you have a unique stile. Jim less

I should buy an air brush since I use a brush and end up sifting too thick a coat. Do you know if Sarah diluted the Klyr-fire and how much? I'm working on a test piece where I chase from the back and repousse from the front, it leaves nice embossed areas on the front, but very a convoluted surface on the back. I'm worried about air bubbles in the cracks. I'll post a pic when I get finished. Thanks. Jim
