When you say chalky do you mean that the surface is not smooth? I am using old Thompson 'crackle' enamels I have had for over 30 years in these pieces which I fire at around 800c. I never use oil to mix or dilute enamel, (don't like the fumes when they burn off), only water.
Same thing when mixing painting or screening enamels...only water. It dries faster of course so you have to work more quickly.

I am hoping you might be able to tell me why my liquid (painting 325+ mesh) enamels are turning out chalky after firing? Temp? Mixing oil? Have you ever had this experience?

What a nice thing to say Harry! it's only in the last several months that I have re-discovered liquid enamels, I have had a lot of fun playing with different combinations of my very old 'crackle' enamels.
