It took about a year and a half of actual studio time (which included ongoing design); the project--both buildings--was "in my life" (commission through Colorado's percent-for-art/Art in Public Places program) almost twice that (thus the design process had started earlier, though I was working on other projects). On the three large panels, the 12" x 18" copper pieces are mounted on 5/8" plywood (sealed on the back for weather protection; hanging bars mounted on the backs) using silicone sealant adhesive; the panels are mounted on the walls with these steel bars. The individual "tiles" (12" square) are mounted directly on the concrete aggregate wall using both a quick-grab adhesive (such as Liquid Nails Projects; anything that grabs fast and sets quickly works) and silicone, which takes longer to set but lasts longer and retains a slight elasticity/"give" which accommodates extremese in temperature and allows the minute expansion/contraction of the metal without shearing off. (The two adhesives are applied at the same time on the backs of the enameled copper pieces, but not mixed together; just side by side). This is how the tiles were applied to the Math/Physics building wall as well. These murals have been in place since 2003 in a climate ranging from above 100 to below zero; both the adhesives and the enameling are holding up fine (testament to the durability of our medium!)
