Ken,   Thank you!  It's multiple layers of enamels, transparents over copper and firescale/oxidized copper, as well as some opaque reds. Random pieces of gold leaf (very thin, hardly there--much thinner than silver folil, for example) fired on--then I added more pieces of gold leaf--the earlier ones sort of fade/get absorbed into the enamel.  I went through ore gold leaf than I'd intended on this.  The obvious pieces of crackled gold in the final piece are the last ones I applied.  I carefully underfired it (in a kiln) just to where the already-fired enamel was again smooth  (after the initial crackling that happens when enameled pieces are heated).  The birds were drawn on with a gold ceramic marker pen (Japanese, from Enamelworks Supply in Seattle).  Hope this helps!
