I do etching two ways. One is to use an etching tool and carve the design directly into the silver. the other is to coat the metal with a resist and let it dry.
Then scratch the design through the coating with a sharp point. the whole piece is

I do etching two ways. One is to use an etching tool and carve the design directly into the silver. the other is to coat the metal with a resist and let it dry.
Then scratch the design through the coating with a sharp point. the whole piece is submerged in acid which eats away the exposed metal. Then the resist is cleaned off, leaving you with metal that can be used as a printing plate and then later enameled.
