The piece is held upright & is attached to a 90 pound steel base. It is amazingly stable. The tentacles are welded to the base. It was carved by creating individual oval segments that were glued & screwed. All the screws are hidden & internal. Building the entire serpentine structure took us 5 months, a ridiculous amount of sanding with many different grits... Progressively finer until we reached 220 grit. The enamel was placed in routed recesses to make it flush with the surface of the wood. It's very pet-able! We wanted people to touch. Finished in Tung oil. It was purchased by ARTISANworks in Rochester, NY. I will post a pic of the face. The P-3 underglaze enamel technique was taught to me by the master enamelist, Tom Ellis. One of my enameling heroes. less
