I grave the areas needed to the base metal in some cases...not all the time but lately more often. As for making the box, it is of 1.2ml sterling silver. The usual silversmithing techniques are used to form the metal. It is then soldered together and a cushion is formed in the lid to accept the enamel which is set into the top then burnished over. Inside it is lined with suede.
Beautiful detailed work. How did you get the leaf structure within the cloisonne sections, is it engraved? Also I'm really interested, how did you made the box itself?
