  • Sturdy stand for a mortar.

As an apprentice in my training as analytical chemist I had pounds of thick coal chunks crush to fine flour. It was very difficult, because the mortar slips to and fro on the stone tiles of the lab table. The technican of the laboratory came up with the idea to make a stand for the mortar.

In a 20 mm (0.8 ") wooden board he was sawing a cone-shaped hole that was slightly larger than the bottom diameter of the mortar. In the opening of the wooden board he glued some about 5 mm (0,2”) thick rubber strips. The board was attached with bar-clamps to the table and could not slip off.

Therewith the very fine coal dust could not fly around all over the laboratory, the mortar was covered while working with a plastic plate in which a hole was cut for the pistil.

Because I grind all of transparent enamel granules by myself, I have copied the simple part for my enamel workshop. It is a simple but effective tool.

I grind the enamels after the methode by Woodrow Carpenter. This is the best way I know! You find the description in "Thompson Enamel Workbook" on pages 36/37 . The workbook is almost a must for every enameller. You can order it here: www.thompsonenamel.com
