Copper fondant on silver

  • June 15, 2016 4:01 PM EDT

Did anybody try to apply copper fondant on silver? I want to place an order, but the company has run out of silver fondant. Would it make sense to buy copper fondant?

Many thanks in advance for your help!

    Hi Yaroslava,

I do not know the term "fondant" - are you asking about "Flux"? the organic liquid that is applied to the metal to help make the enamels stick on? or the clear enamel that is the base for applying cloisonne wires?

    Dear Trish,

yes, I meant flux (fondant is the same in French). Have you tried to apply copper flux onto silver?

If you mean Soyer flux 1 vs Soyer flux 3, Soyer 1 has a greenish yellow hue on silver. It will adhere fine tough. So it's a matter of whether you can do with the colour shift or not.

Btw, if Soyer ran out maybe Artisanat et loisirs in Bordeaux have some left?

Panie Leszku, ale docelowo ten Schauer jest to miedzi czy srebra? Dziękuję za odpowiedź!

Dear Mr Paeder, thank you very much for your reply! That's exactly what I meant. If there are special fluxes for silver and copper, they must be different. I followed your advice and asked Artisanat et loisirs. Unfortunately, they have run of silver flux. Anyway I am very grateful for all advices!

Ok yes, Soyer 3 is bluer and therefore looks colourless on silver. It is similar to Schauer 2A. For Schauer, Joachim Hiller has a compatibility chart on his website (see here). And if you can go lead-free Thompson 2020 won't yellow on silver (in Europe you can get it from http://www.enamelsupply.com ). There's also W.G. Ball 7266, which looks good as well, but I had compatibility issues with that one.

Dear Mr Paeder, I am very grateful to all your extremely valuable advices! You know so much about fluxes of different manufacturers, I could not wish more. Many thanks again!
