Anyone have knowledge of fusing gold to enamel, besides gold foil?

    Thank you,

    Rosemary

    Hi Mary,

Could you be more specific? if your asking if you can use gold under enamels - yes you can. But Silver would be less expensive with a gold foil layered under the enamel then set in a gold setting.

    Hi Trish,

Thank you for your response.  I was referring to gold in some form, but not gold foil, which I am familiar with.  Perhaps painting the gold on the enameled piece at some point, a liquid gold maybe.  That is what I am searching for, a gold next to or over the enamel color that may be fired or unfired.  Either a powder or liquid gold.

    Thank you, Trish,

    Mary

    Hi Mary,

A couple of years ago I got some gold nanopowder (mine was from mateck.com). It works well mixed with a bit of oil (used terpineol then but I don't see why another oil shouldn't work). It tends to vanish after a few firings though. It should also work fine with micropowder. I tried 5um silver from dukatshop.de, which behaved rather similarly. In both cases the result was a mat metallic colour.

Otherwise there're solutions that are meant for porcelain, but there's a good chance that they work fine on enamel too, provided that the fusing temperature isn't too far off. For instance this one: http://www.decor-porcelaine.fr/metaux-precieux-metaux-precieux-xsl-3639_3832.html

I didn't try those paints so I can only make assumptions. I'd say that unless there's a chemical incompatibility, they should work on enamel (otherwise that's a pricy trial). As with painting enamels for ceramics otherwise, the layer is so thin that there's no risk of cracking. Paint brands like Schjerning or Ceradel work fine on enamel as well.
