Ikat: Layers & Threads. Wallpiece. 2011.

    Enamel, copper, wood backing.

    9"W x 6 1/2"H x 2"D

This is the full piece assembled.

This layer is on heavy gauge copper, with lots of scratching and distressing of the surface, then underglaze rubbed in, fired, more added, layers of enamel, etc, then some overglaze. I put a coin edge on this, and matted the surface.

This layer is also heavy gauge copper with a layer of pressed ginbari foil, transparents over, red underglaze and more transparent over.

This layer is the tessera with some cloisonne (only where it shows)

This layer is all underglaze, covered with clear flux, then some overglaze to punch the contrast. A final coat of flux is then matted with acid.

This shows the assembled of layers of the body, along with the tiger/cat.

Again, the whole piece, assembled. I use a high quality silicone, assembling one layer at a time, using wood spacers. I start at the back and work forward, giving each layer a full 24-hour curing time for maximum strength. The wood at the very back has the attachment system.

    Marsha,

Thank you for posting on the construction of this piece. I am really intrigued by the visual depth of this piece, and so many techniques.

Thanks, Pam! I also was intrigued to see your pictures from the Kathy Wilcox workshop. Looks wonderful! Hope sometime I can have you in one of my workshops!

I too find your achieving such depth is very attractive. Love this.
