Tina Carvalho There is an enamel artist from Japan who visits Honolulu twice a year. She had a wonderful enamel called 611 HT (Half Transparent) that is no longer made. The substitute I now use is Ninomiya P200 that is sort of a milky white.

My Vcella has inside dimensions of 11" high x 9" wide - I just make it inside when doing some bowls - I have had the kiln since 2000 - the only thing I changed was adding a pyrometer so that I could watch the heat more accurately - That ran me about $400 and I installed it myself - I have not seen the new line of Vcella kilns so I don't know what they offer now -  They certainly are not cheap but a great investment - but I will say, I am also happy with my Paragon - altho it is very small inside and really only good for small flat pieces - Go bigger, you will always be glad you had the space.

    Hi Amy,

You should be able to solder your earring backs on to the backpiece with easy solder. When I add a finding to my saw and solder champleve pieces, I was taught my Linda Darty to use easy solder - it goes down very quickly and does not disturb the enamel on the front. Try it with some junk pieces before you work the good one but you should have no problem.

As far as kilns - I love my Vcella - before you invest in a kiln, think about the size - as you do not want to buy too small, and then be unhappy when you can't put a dish or bowl inside. This was pointed out to me when I first bought a kiln, and it was the best advice. Recently I purchased a Paragon kiln for use with Metal Clay and it has program settings which my Vcella does not have and the kiln is excellent also.

One more question on the kiln issue, Trish. What size do you have? I would like to incorporate some larger pieces as you said at some point. Thanks again for your suggestions! ~Amy
