Wow! I would anticipate problems fusing with such a thick sheet. The heat would melt the glass, but does it bond properly to the metal? Is there a reason you have the metal so thick?

I did not design it! I was commissioned to make the wings. They are made on Palladium white gold which was a dream to work with for plique, since it doesn't expand and contract much when heated. We have found out a little more. It is not so very ancient - only goes back about 100 years - started by a German enamelist working in conjunction with local artisans.

I have noticed what seems to be a relationship with older metal work. In Mogul period very thin copper hammered into depressions in an early form of champleve (the depressions were hammered instead of etched) This skill in repousee seems still to be used.

We are hoping to publish something for the 2012 SNAG conference which will be in Toronto in 2013. Our researcher is in Iran at the moment, but may not be able to make it to Isphahan.

If you make it to a minikari studio in Isphahan I would love to hear any observations you have. Do they manufacture their own enamels on site? How old are the design patterns and what influenced them? (One source said they are related to tile design - but to me they look very different, though often the same colours. Does the blue colour have symbolic significance? If not why is blue so important.

I would be interested to know how you got interested in enameling and where you learned. I would also love to see some of your pieces!

Thanks again - I will post here when I find any more information on my end.

Hi Catherine. I saw  your experimental pieces. They look great. Unfortunately I am not familiar with traditional Minakari. I contacted the Iranian Handicraft Organization and got the phone number of a traditional enameler. I couldn’t reach her today. I’ll try again and let you know the result.

By the way I am travelling to Isfahan (city of Minakari) for our new year’s holiday (21st- 25th march). I’ll try to visit a Minakari workshop and learn as much as I can. Hope they are not closed for holiday L

Unfortunately in Iran Masters of different arts are not very willing to share their experiences with younger enthusiasts. They believe that the young generation will appreciate the value of art only if they learn it the hard way. It was  very surprising for me to see how all of you share your knowledge here. I believe this is the way it should be.

    I’ll try my best.

    Regards,

    Hello all

I have a client that wants to try enameling on aluminium. I know that Thompson no longer manufacters their low temperature high expansion enamels - is there anyone who does? Or is there anyone who might have some leftover that I could purchase? I am looking for white.

    Thanks!

in the topic Plique a jour on White Gold or Platinum in the forum General Discussions

I have a commission to enamel some plique-a-jour dragonfly wings for a brooch. Thecustomer first wanted the metal structure to be made of white gold (someone else is doing this work - I just have to do the enamelling) but when I suggested that alloys in general were problematic except for enamelling gold, they suggested platinum. (These wings will also be set with diamonds).

My first wish would be an argument that they should be done in fine silver rather than either of these metals, but presuming that the customer will not be moved - what do you think my chances are of success? Acording to an article by Woodrow Carpenter in Glass on Metal, both of these metals can be enamelled on - but not with medium temperature, medium expansion enamels. The article suggests medium temperature, low expansion or high temperature, medium expansion (neither of which I have used before)

My first request to the jeweller will be a coupd of small grids I can make tests on. I am imagining that suspending the enamel in either of these metals will create other issues than enamelling ON them - but would be delighted if someone who is familiar with these metals could give me an idea of what I can expect...

I will post pics as I go along...
