I think the trick to using granules in the enamel is to go slow building up. My friend Mary likes to use a diamond bit to make small depressions in the glass before adding her granules but I add a thin layer of enamel and set them in that...they usually sink into the glass if you fire it enough. If you're going for the ground off granule look that stays on the surface, put them on in your last layer or two. The silver granules I did in this piece, I'm not happy with at all...they got scum bubbles around them because I tried to do it all quickie quick, in one step...didn't work too well but I learned a good lesson from it. less

I have used silver and gold granules. Why is it they sometimes cause problems?

Thanks...this guy was a lotof work...the setting isn't all that great but I had to unset him after I was half way done rolling the bezel down...by that time it was almost 1:30 in the morning, my fingers felt like little vienna sausages, and I accidentally dropped it and the piece cracked...so...I had to unset and then repair the enamel, then reset...it was a less than perfectly dreamy piece by the time I was done with it and I was really truly happy to see it go - crimpy corners and all (bye bye!!)! LOL! less
