Step 1 - enamel an object. Gather a Speedball pen and P3 enamel-bearing oil from Thompson Enamel, medium fusing clear powdered enamel Thompson # 2030, enamel sifter.

Step 2 - dip pen in oil, touch side of pen to top of jar to remove excess oil.

Step 3 - write on enameled object. Re-dip pen as necessary. Be very careful not to touch writing as it will smear quite easily.

Step 4 - Prepare medium fusing clear powdered enamel Thompson # 2030 & enamel sifter.

Step 5 - LIGHTLY sprinkle clear enamel onto entire surface of object.

Step 6 - place on firing trivet

Step 7 - Fire for about a minute.
    IMPORTANT!  IMPORTANT!   IMPORTANT!
Fire only until clear enamel turns shiny. Firing too long will result in spreading of the hand writing & making it blurry.

Step 8 - remove from kiln & cool completely.

    Finished object

Another example still hot from the kiln. Remember, fire the clear fusing enamel only until it turns shiny!

This is so interesting! I can't wait to try this technique. Thank you for posting the information.

You are very welcome, Terry. Let me know if I can answer any questions :-)))

I've never used a speedball pen. Is there a "best" tip to buy for the pen for this technique?
  • July 20, 2010
Yes. At A C Moore's or Michael's, there are two sets of Speedball pens/tips sold on cards. One with broader tips and one with smaller tips. Get the smaller tips. If you look in steps 1 and 2, you'll see the circular tip from that set that I used.

I wish I had seen this before I made my nieces initial pendants using decals! The handwriting method is just so much more personalized. Thank you so much for writing this!
