Applying Transparent Enamels to copper

  • November 20, 2011

I wrote this paper to assist those seeking to use transparent enamels on copper, perhaps for the first time. It supplements information already available in books and articles on enamelling, and includes some of the writer's own observations and experiments.

Raymond, Thank you for such an informative study in the application of transparent enamels. I really enjoyed reading your findings.

Thank you so much for sharing this!

Can you tell me if the information also applies to non-leaded enamels?  I am currently using a variety of transparent and opaque non-leaded enamels on copper.

    Dear Pam,

Thank you for your kind words and I am glad you found the article of interest.

    Dear Flora,

My article is based on leaded enamels. However, I can think of no good reason why it should not also apply to unleaded enamels.

    Excellent reading. Thank you.

"texturing the base of cells with a threadtool" caught my eye...is the referring to engraving?  I would love to know something more about this.

    Dear Vera,

The threadtool or lining tool has a number of sharp grooves that can be used like a file to impart fine lines to the base of cells. They can be purchased with various lines per inch to create the fineness you want. I am not an expert in the use of such a tool but have used it on occasion to impart fine lines which appear as veins on leaves for example.
