I recently took a Foil class at Kathy Wilcox's studio. She had a guest demonstration by the wonderful Chris Hierholzer. This was the first torch firing of enamels that I have seen. His application and sgraffito of the foil was great to watch. He has a nice article on foil and torch firing on Patsy Croft's website: http://alohilanidesigns.com/working-with-foils/
Here are some photos of his demonstration at Kathy's:
He is setting the gold foil with Klyr Fire
He is fusing the foil to the base enamels
He is sgraffito'ing the foil
This is the piece - sgraffito complete and ready for final firing with clear enamel on top
Final firing...watch the progression of the enamel
Here you could stop the firing and have a "druzy" effect to the jewel
Bringing it to a glossy sheen
Thank you Chris! Thank you Kathy for sharing him with your students :)
